How it started - my childhood
I am Hoyoung and was born in South Korea. My dream to become a computer scientist has started when I first discovered the early personal computers from Apple and IBM at age 7. Since my school did not have any computer courses, I took night classes with other adults at a technical institution for several years until there are no new courses left thanks to my supportive parents. One day, the school principal appointed me as the head of computer department and allowed me to skip classes and attend big tech conferences to share knowledge with students and staffs. From early on, I had a pretty good exposure to how computers work, how to use them and how they are being used by other companies. Besides computers, I really liked math and science as they both explain things beautifully with a simple equation. Unfortunately, I don't have much good memories with subjects that mostly required memorization and/or disambiguation. At the same time, I had another big dream about going abroad to study. Throughout my early school years, there were very few classmates whose family decided to emigrate and I would greatly envy them. In 2002, my uncle's immigration application was accepted by Canada and I tagged along and finally landed in Canada as an international student at age 16.
